Pangea Trust Joins Forces with Rewilding Portugal

We’re excited to announce our partnership with Rewilding Portugal. They are experts in the restoration of Mediterranean landscapes and are renowned for their work in the Greater Côa Valley in northeastern Portugal. This will be their first project in the region of Alentejo.

Rewilding Portugal will be responsible for overseeing Pangea’s nature recovery plan, in which our 1000-acre estate will be transformed into a haven for both elephants and native wildlife, showcasing how rewilding and sustainable land management practices can breathe new life into the landscape.

This land has a history that reflects many of the challenges faced by rural areas in the Mediterranean. For decades, it was used as a cattle farm, with intensive grazing practices that left the soil depleted and the ecosystem fragile. Later, parts of the property were converted into eucalyptus plantations—an approach that may be lucrative but often degrades biodiversity and water resources.

Our approach combines rewilding principles with sustainable land management practices. We’ll restore native vegetation, introduce natural grazers, and provide a spacious, near-natural environment where elephants can thrive for the first time in a Mediterranean setting in thousands of years. This effort will rejuvenate the land, boost biodiversity, and improve water and soil health, setting a powerful example of what’s possible when we work with nature.

We’re just getting started, and we look forward to sharing more details in the months ahead.
