Gandhi was captured in Thailand and taken to Givskud park in Denmark in 1973. She was entrusted to the former zoo of Pont-Scorff (currently Les Terres de Nataé) in 1998, and has finally been rehomed to Elephant Haven. Gandhi is the first resident for Elephant Haven, a 29-hectare farm set up by Sofie Goetghebeur and Tony Verhulstin Limousine, France, as a retirement home for female Asian elephants from zoos and circuses.
