Portugal Mayors Co-Host First Media Briefing

Pangea is Opening in 2026

There’s been plenty of excitement in Portugal about an elephant sanctuary opening in the Alentejo and today the time finally came to hold our first media briefing, announcing that Pangea is slated to open in early 2026. The Mayors of Alandroal and Vila Viçosa co-hosted the event alongside our Ambassador, Joana Vasconcelos, with representatives from the wildlife and veterinary authorities and other dignitaries in attendance. It was a chance to publicly acknowledge all their input in recent years that has helped us turn vision into reality.

Over 100 journalists and partners attended the event to hear about the need for a European sanctuary, our model, partners, progress on licencing and site development, and readiness for initial arrivals. Following a Q&A, the guests were given a tour of the sanctuary.
