Minor Medical Issue Requiring Treatment

We know so many of you have been eagerly waiting for news of Kariba’s journey to Pangea, and we wanted to share an important update. Her move was intended to take place at the end of this month. Unfortunately, the universe had other plans.

Just days before her scheduled relocation, an abscess was discovered on her foot that requires treatment before she can safely travel. Foot abscesses are a common ailment in elephants who have spent their lives in captivity but they are well understood and very treatable with good veterinary care. This, of course, is deeply disappointing for all of us who have worked so hard to prepare for her arrival at the sanctuary. However, Kariba’s wellbeing will always come first. If there is any risk that travel could worsen her condition or compromise her recovery during the relocation from Belgium to Portugal, then we will always choose to wait until she is fully healed.

While this means the journey to her new home is now delayed, we are incredibly grateful that the issue was identified in time, before she was moved. The priority now is ensuring Kariba receives all the care she needs before taking this important step. We are working closely with her veterinary team and will share further updates once we have a clearer picture of her progress.
