Julie Confirmed as Pangea’s First Elephant

Our First Resident is Arriving Soon

We are excited to announce that Julie, the last circus elephant in Portugal, will soon become the first resident at Pangea. As Kariba takes the time she needs to recover from her abscess, everything has fallen into place for Julie.

When we announced in May that Julie would be coming to Pangea, Kariba was still due to arrive from Belgium first. That changed when a foot abscess was discovered just days before Kariba’s planned departure. Her welfare remains the priority, and she will make the journey when it is safe for her to do so. While Kariba continues her recovery, we’ve decided to move forward with bringing Julie to Pangea.

All of Julie’s pre-travel health checks have passed and our team has been visiting regularly to ensure she is fit for relocation. We now feel confident Julie is ready to be moved soon.

Julie’s Appeal

Today we are launching Julie’s appeal. She will soon have the freedom to roam and forage as she has not done since she was a calf when she was taken from the wild, and it won’t be long until she has other elephants to socialise with. Elephants that have been in captivity like this for so long need expert daily care because of the physical legacies of years in captivity, such as lameness and mobility problems. They can’t be reversed but can be eased by the free movement and specialised care which is exactly what the sanctuary provides.
