Exciting News from The Elephant Sanctuary!
At Pangea Trust, we are thrilled to share the heartwarming news from The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee: Osh has officially arrived! On October 18, this majestic African male elephant became the Sanctuary’s 34th resident, marking a significant addition to their family.
Osh’s journey from Oakland, California, was a team effort, with dedicated zoo staff and a veterinarian accompanying him every step of the way. Upon his arrival in Hohenwald, Osh quickly settled into his new barn, enthusiastically exploring his surroundings and savouring a delicious feast of large pumpkins, banana leaves, and fresh local browse. It’s clear he has a taste for blueberry bagels and coconut water, too!
Within hours, Osh ventured into his habitat, sampling the lush vegetation of Tennessee and playfully pushing against trees. Artie, another resident elephant, watched with curiosity from the transition yard, welcoming Osh as he began to explore his new environment. For now, they’ll be able to communicate through protective fencing as Osh adjusts to his new home.
The care team from Oakland Zoo is collaborating closely with The Sanctuary to ensure Osh’s transition is smooth and comfortable. Recognising the crucial role of social interactions in elephant well-being, this relocation was made after careful consideration with the AZA’s African Elephant Taxon Advisory Group (TAG). The move allows Osh the chance to socialise with other elephants, including his former herd mate, Donna, who joined The Sanctuary last year.
“We are excited to welcome Osh to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee,” says Janice Zeitlin, CEO. “His arrival marks a significant moment for us as our second African male elephant. We are grateful for the ongoing collaboration with Oakland Zoo and for his safe travels.”
